Pro-tip: Think of your music as organic entities that grow and change naturally.

During my time studying Composition at university, this is one of the few things that really stuck with me and was something a great composer told me after I showed him one of my early productions.

Treat your music like it has a life of its own; make it evolve and change as it progresses. It’s a simple idea but very powerful.

Add in small details you think nobody will notice (hint: they will, at least subconsciously), vary things up in 4/8/16 bar sections and add slight variations to sounds as they repeat. Don’t let a second of it be filler or sound like it shouldn’t be there.

Make your tunes come alive and separate them from the rest of the pack by giving them a soul of their own.
