In bass-heavy music like drum and bass, the low mid area (about 150-500hz) is crucial for providing pressure, weight and thickness. It can also be a nightmare to control and requires very careful listening to produce a tight low end.
“Muddiness” or “boxiness” is what too much low midrange can sound like. Be careful with the pitching of your kicks, sidechaining your kicks to your low end and design your basses to all fit together nicely down the low end of the spectrum.
When in doubt as to weather your low mids are sounding clear enough or not, do some A/Bing with pro tunes and you’ll find you’ll probably need to scoop some muck out of there.
